Imagine an integrated solutions comprised of 3 engines, a Database Engine, an Application Engine and an Access Control Server. This is an example of a distributed system.
User will connect to the Access Engine, however Access Engine will talk to the Application Engine in order to performe the user requests and Application Engine will talk to Database Engine in order to retrieve or restore data.
Each of these components run on
different computers therefore there is no phsycal link between the three other than the communicating ports. This scheme ensures that any problem on the Access Engine or
Application Engine (such as hacks, viruses, worms, ect.) will not affect the core engine of the solution which is the database. Your information are kept secure from outsider attacks with a unified distributed model.
